At various conferences and events I attend I have posted a series of 'live blog' style Tweets/Posts on X.
Given that X posts are no longer publicly available without an account, and many people prefer to avoid the platform, I have reproduced verbatim below my tweets from the Radio TechCon event on 27th November 2023.
I have left in errors from the original post, and there will be some formatting errors due to the manual process of converting the content, further edits will be made in the future to fix these formatting errors and to embed the couple of missing video clips (once I work out a simple way of doing this.)
The main purpose of this is to 'archive' the content in an hopefully more secure and accessible location, thus I have retrospectively set the published date of this post to the original event date to aid search. The majority of the sessions have since been published on the organisers YouTube channel and some of my thoughts on the event I may publish separately in the future (after I've refilled the coffee machine!)

Made it to Savoy Place for  #radtechcon Coffee and trade show Being overly brave sitting at front of lecture theatre.

Luckily for the speakers I haven’t brought the tomatoes.

First session. Using private 5G networks in places were public network saturated.

Consumer 5G doesn’t use all the facilities the specs allow for, for time critical / prioritised traffic.

Talk of Kings Coronation tech. Private 5G using “full stack” not the bodge of 5G on top of 4GLTE.

But there was a ‘bodge’ to get 5G modems clear of obstructions, a bit of rack shelf and a boom pole   #RadioTechCon

Nice touch with a glossary of terms on the side screens in the theatre.

Sustainability of broadcasting a industry with inherently has large technical footprint and thus heavy energy usage. Following from last session talking of challenges of power in Afghanistan, in UK is Net Zero more achievable? It’s more than just Green power supplies

UK Business climate hub is  good resource:businessclimatehub.uk

Suggested you review current operations.

I’ve got studios and transmitters on buildings with Solar power installed by the landlord probably we don’t credit the environmental credentials of this.

See I do sometimes do work that’s not sitting in conferences #radtechcon

Question on what can we do about software providers “forcing” upgrading IT and servers every 5 years. Good question with no easy answer.

Back after tea break. Next session on 5 live with spilt studios in London and Salford.

Using vMix and @Broadcast Bionics

Virtual Director software. Remote control London studio from Salford Gallery.

One video circuit between London and Salford with camera switching each end and clever safety commands to avoid loops.

Very impressive setup for Nicky Campbell. With a mixture of auto or manual vision mixing with a Stream Deck to easily switch between modes. #RadTechCon

Slightly less hardcore technical session now on Age Friendly employment.

Good observation from the audience question highlighting a large number of older volunteers in #CommunityRadio Perhaps our counterparts in BBC and Commercial sector would be wise to tap into this potential skilled workforce.

Ofcom up next (the technical cordination part at PMSE not the pesky complaints and regulation part)

Sounds like an administrative nightmare coordinating users, especially things such as F1 with kit needing worldwide use, which might not match UK spectrum allocations.

Future of podcasting and using AI. Idea of Modular Podcasting to react to different user preferences.

Using AI to spilt audio based on type of sound content, not the content of the audio.

Pod-CLIPR algorithm includes “jingle detection” feeds into PODULR tool (still very much a beta) #podcasting Looks most impressive

Maybe another tool towards my dream of feeding the terrabytes of archive audio logs of years of broadcasts into “the machine” and catalogue into something useful.

Talking on hearing loss. Worth thinking about how many in your audience have some hearing loss. Talk of “Signal to Noise” in so much of the “noise” being background music.

Ding ding. Session about @The Legendary Real Radio Caroline start with history before we get to interesting technology they have today.

There CR AM transmitter bill went through the roof with increased electricity costs. The answer… Solar Panels.

A mop and bucket needed to clear the solar attenuators provided by the bird sanctuary.
