Over the past few years I’ve ‘live tweeted’ various conferences and events I’ve attended. Recently I’ve been doing this on BlueSky, given the Twitter/X ‘issues’, not least that you need to have an account to read, that’s before you dive into people’s views about the current ‘state’ of the platform.

I embedded the BlueSky posts of my ‘live blog’ below, so please do forgive any typos etc. Later I’ll go through and update this page with the content and images directly. So check back in the future if you want to avoid having to keep jumping into BlueSky.

The event held at the Holiday Inn, Bolton, had a theme of celebrating 100 years of Hospital Broadcasting. As it was just ‘up the road’ from me I thought it would be useful to attend and I found it a very interesting day. It has been a long time since I last attended an HBA conference, I’ve not checked my notes in depth but I suspect the last time I went was Blackpool 2009!

The HBA presented a new ‘Impact Report‘ into Hospital Broadcasting, following on from a similar research project a decade ago, which looks like a really valuable document. Many of the sessions I attended where good, though the AI session really would have benefited a longer time slot.

The evening saw the Hospital Radio Awards. I didn’t attend these, was a bit pricey for a posh dinner when there wasn’t any change of collecting an award (funny thing if you don’t enter, you don’t get nominated!) But at least it was a sit down dinner not a ‘fish and chip van’….

A more in-depth write up may, or may not, appear at some time in the future, but in the meantime here’s the post I made on the day:

It's the #hbauk2026 conference in Bolton this weekend. Celebrating 100 years of Hospital Radio. Find me there on Saturday with my "Percy" branded holdall and baseball cap offloading limited supplies of "New Old Stock" Hospital Radio Goodies at an amazing 100% discount off these 1984 prices.

#hbauk2026 HBA AGM time. I don't think there is anything of any "exciting" mainly just the formalities….

Phil Edmonds (@philedmonds.uk) 2026-03-21T13:37:20.113Z

#hbauk2026 Ray Paul from the audio academy a.k.a radio academy on a session about their work and the future of AI with a packed room.

Phil Edmonds (@philedmonds.uk) 2026-03-21T14:33:39.336Z

AI is a challenge, you need to know how to embrace it. Roy says in some ways it's just a new way of working like moving from editing on tape, to digital playout.

Phil Edmonds (@philedmonds.uk) 2026-03-21T14:39:50.762Z

Interesting discussion on AI music and production, copyright is very murky on these.

Phil Edmonds (@philedmonds.uk) 2026-03-21T14:42:55.254Z

Could have done with this session being much longer, lots of interesting discussion, such as "Miles" who presents the Jazz show, who is made by AI, but a listener asked to meet.

Phil Edmonds (@philedmonds.uk) 2026-03-21T15:06:26.526Z

#hbauk2026 Next session on branding.
